Florence & Peanut

Welcoming Peanut

I love dogs. When I was in Haiti, I had many of them and I had been looking for another one to keep me company here. When I saw Peanut’s picture online, I knew right away she was the one.

I can’t tell exactly how old Peanut was when I got her, but the lady who had posted her already had a purse, a closet full of clothes for Peanut and accessories as well, which I found very odd. After I got her, I took her to the vet for a check up and on top of being very skinny, her teeth were all rotten. They ended up removing all but four of them, which we later found on the couch.

After that, I tried to stay in touch with the lady as I thought it would be nice, but she kept telling me to “bring her back if I didn’t like her”, which was strange.

Peanut is my baby, she’s my life, she’s my everything.

Peanut to the Rescue

Peanut saved my life on several occasions.

The first time, there was a fire in my apartment. My bedroom door was closed and with my hearing not being perfect, I couldn’t hear the fire alarm going off. It was Peanut who kept going to the bedroom door to warn me. I was so worried about her and kept holding on to her. We really try to protect each other. Whenever the alarm goes off, Peanut is the first and only thing I grab before I run out.

I also have a medical condition that involves kidney failure. Peanut knows about it and when I don’t feel well or when I have panic attacks, she always lies down very close next to me, if not on top of me. She calms me down when I’m unable to breathe and switches my attention to her instead.

Peanut was with me when I left a mentally abusive relationship. He never hurt her, but dogs are smart and can differentiate the good people from the bad. Before she lost her sight, she grew not to like men with baseball caps or hats because my ex used to wear them.

A Little Diva

Peanut is 13 now and she’s quite the little diva: she likes to walk and loves running up and down the hallway in my apartment. I wake up to her face stuck to mine every morning. Sometimes, it’s her butt. We then get ready and go grab our coffee together at the Blue Bird Coffee in the Market, where she also gets her little piece of croissant. She’s very famous in the Byward Market. Everybody knows her! She’s even modeled before at the CTV Runway Show for her groomer, Giselle Beaudoin (Pucci Parlour).

Whenever I get back home, Peanut is always there to welcome me. She can’t run up to me anymore now that she’s blind, but she still knows I’m there and tries her best to find me and sniff me. Sometimes, it hurts to know that she can’t see anymore, but people tell me not to worry because her sense of smell is stronger and makes up for it now.
